Tips For Hiking With Your Baby
I love to hike.
Give me a trail in the woods and I am in heaven.
But with a new baby, will this mean the end of my passion?
Fortunately, not only is it possible to hike with my baby, it is good for both of us. Now, I am not saying you should hike across the Grand Canyon with a 6 month old but getting the baby outside into the fresh air has no negatives.
What will you need for a hike with your baby?
Well first and foremost, you will need to visit the baby carriers backpacks section of your local baby store and find a quality carrier. You must find one that is comfortable not only for the baby but for yourself.
Secondly, you will need sun protection such as an umbrella or a lightweight blanket.
Thirdly, you better bring diapers and a changing pad. Plan on a couple of changes during the hike and you will need the pad so you won’t have to change your baby on dirt or a flat rock.
So how far can you take your baby on a hike?
If your baby is under a month, you should forget it. There are way too many dangers out there for a baby that is not fully developed yet. The jostling, sun, etc. could be dangerous.
A baby who is 1-6 months old will usually be good for a half hour or so. Ensure that you have a carrier with proper neck support when carrying a baby this young.
If your baby is 6-15 months old, you can plan on a couple of hours at least which amounts to a great hike.
If your child is older than 15 months, you can plan on a very long hike. Your child will still use a carrier but can also walk some of it him or herself, although progress will be slow.
Having a baby doesn’t mean you have to give up your love for hiking in the mountains, woods, etc. Continue to get your daily exercise while instilling a love for hiking in your child. You will both be glad you did!
